At that point, I wasn't really digging into the story itself. I was just trying to have these characters dressed as cowboys. To be honest, I had something in mind and just went on with it - there's just one sketch per character because I didn't bother looking further. I might do that now, but I see nothing wrong with these outfits and I'm more interested in finally putting words on that story.
That's when I started doing some research about old fashion.
Claire Hummel did a great blog post about fashion in different eras with a lot of resources but I didn't dig that much in it - very instructive, but that wasn't really relevant to what I was doing. I just threw together a few things I saw on random websites and imagined the rest (while being admittedly a bit influenced by the Lucky Luke comics. I re-read them at that time and that's when I realized Morris had actually put in a lot of research on this period, historically and visually).
I have some links saved but that's not very interesting:
http://www.westernemporium.com/western.php (not necessarily historically accurate but it obviously borrowed real elements and seems believable enough).
